I watched The Dark Knight recently and I noticed something I’ve never picked up on before. It looks like the Joker is smiling all the time because of the makeup and the scars, but if you look beyond that, if you only look at his expression, the only times he smiles are when he’s with Batman and in particular when Batman is beating him. To me that says something about his character. The Joker is obviously insane, which would suggest something happened in his past which made him the way he is. I would imagine he suffered some kind of trauma, or multiple traumas, causing devastation to his mental state. In order to appear happy he wears scars and makeup, but nothing can satisfy his innate unhappiness. He says it here, and implies it when he’s talking to Two-Face in the hospital- “I’m like a dog chasing a car, I wouldn’t know what to do with it if I caught it”- he himself admits that he doesn’t know what will satisfy his depression. Until then he commits acts of violence and terror, because he is obsessed with chaos, because he has experienced chaos in his past and by repressing it becomes obsessed with it himself. It’s Freudian. Then he encounters Batman, a character as bizarre as he is himself and yet his exact opposite: an agent of order. The Joker can see that Batman must also have experienced some trauma, some chaos in his past, which is why he feels they complete one another. The Joker smiles a lot in this scene; here he is laughing because Batman has misunderstood him, but he also smiles a lot when Batman is beating him, and in their last scene together when Batman leaves him hanging for the SWAT team. To me these are signs of sadomasochism- he gains momentary satisfaction from inflicting pain, but is only fully satisfied when pain is inflicted upon himself. This has a poignancy when the pain is inflicted upon him by Batman, because Batman represents the order that deep down the Joker craves but cannot have. The Joker is angry at the world for the chaos it brought to him in his past, but for some reason he is also angry at himself. To me, that makes him the most tragic character of the film.

Damien Wayne was my first Robin.
I only got into comics a few years back - specifically at the same time as Grant Morrison was given the helm. I picked up a Batman book called R.I.P. Then I went to the library and found a book called Batman and Son. Reading it (knowing next to nothing about Tim Drake, Talia Al Ghul or anything not covered in early 90s cartoons) I fell in love with the sarcastic, damaged but vulnerable Damien Wayne. Not a lot of people liked Damien back then, in the very beginning, but I loved him from the start. He was so full of fire, even if he wasn’t harnessing it very helpfully at the time. But let’s face it - any kid who will stand up to Batman and tell him he thought he’d be taller deserves respect.
I’ve followed Damien’s story since then. I’ve read a lot of other books since getting into Batman - stuff with Dick (the Robin of my childhood though I wasn’t really into it back then), Jason and Tim, but Damien is the only Robin I’ve ever followed in real time. I hope they do bring him back, and hope they do it soon.

I read a little bit of Batman when I started to get into comic books but the first regular I started buying was Batman and Robin with Dick and Damien. I fell in love with the pair of them and read up as much as I could about the 2 of them. I loved the idea of a grumpy, violent kid as Robin. I’ve read the others as Robin but I must admit, Damien is my favourite Robin, because he was the one that I got introduced to Batman with. I’m sad to see him go.

so Death of the Family finishes in a couple of days and I have an awful feeling the big finale is going to involve Alfred dying.

I’m hoping he doesn’t die- hell he’s the one person in the world that can send Batman to bed early with no supper!

Unfortunately I know from experience that hoping for something to not happen in comics usually means it’s going to happen.

So, Tim. No one else you’d want by your side, eh?

A Partial List of People Tim Drake Would Want By His Side Going Into Battle Over Jason Todd:

  •  Bruce Wayne
  •  Dick Grayson
  • Conner Kent/Kon-El
  • Stephanie Brown
  • Cassandra Cain
  • Bart Allen
  • Barbara Gordon
  • Cassie Sandsmark
  • Helena Bertinelli
  • Probably Selina Kyle
  • Possibly Jean-Paul Valley as well
  • Hell, maybe even Damian
  • Literally anyone short of actual villains

Don’t forget Conner Hawk, Rose Wilson, Wally West, and Clark Kent… all people who worked with or teamed up with him.

I seriously think the writer of the issue didn’t really think that interior monologue through before writing. :/

Literally Tim has the ability to work with anyone

I think Scott Lobdell just wants his 2 main characters to be best friends because they’re his now and he will do whatever he wants with them regardless of any backstory whatsoever.
